A
little under 3 million tons of tea are produced in the world
each year. The main producer countries, by order of size, are
India (34 %), China (19 %), Sri Lanka (11 %), Kenya 10 %), followed
by Indonesia, Turkey, Japan, Iran, Georgia, Argentina, not to
mention Malawi, Taiwan and Mozambique.
In terms of consumption, Ireland
holds the record with 3.6 kg per year per person, followed by
the English with 3.15 kg - all within the British isles. The
best known teas from each of these countries are Ching Wo, Chun
Mee, Gunpowder, Keemun, Lapsang Souchong, Oolong, Ti Kuan Yin
and Yunnan from China, Assam, Darjeeling and Nilgiri from India,
Orange Pekoe from Sri Lanka, and Bancha, Hoji Cha, Ko Keicha
and Sencha from Japan. If you decide to cultivate your own tea,
there is nothing to prevent you from giving it your name. The
most important factor for a name is its poetry and a reference
to taste. If your name happens to evoke a flavor or color, then
it might just become famous !
